I agree with you on Toshiba, HP and Sony. I´ve had a Toshiba notebook for quite a while now and its the cheapest they had <g> 1gb ram 120gb HD dvd wr r etc. I do everything with it, I have Photoshop and Dreamweaver on it, both hogs, and its never let me down... My son has a Sony Vaio laptop and the only thing he had a problem with was not enough memory, which he fixed by adding a stick to it. I have owed two Acers in the past. We used to sell them when I worked at Circuit City. Circuit City still sells them. One time I purchased what was supposed to be a new Acer notebook directly from the manufacturer. When I received it, I discovered that it had been previously-owned by someone else (their information was still in the computer). I called my salesperson at Acer and his response was (and I quote): "Well, it's new to you, isn't it?" I then stated that I was going to return the unit and he said that there would be a 20% "restocking fee." I stated that he had never indicated that there was anything like a restocking fee prior to my having purchased the unit, nor was there anything about a restocking fee on the invoice. I then suggested that he contact Acer's legal department about adding additional terms after the sale to a consumer and the concept of "unfair and deceptive trade practices." Within an hour, I received a telephone call back from the salesman, who apologized for the "misunderstanding" and offered me the next model up (faster CPU, larger hard drive, etc.) for the same price that I paid and sent a FedEx label to pick up the "used" notebook. Of course, the "irony" was that the new Acer that I got from them "died" about 3 months after the 1 year warranty expired.... Based upon my experiences as a salesperson selling Acer computers and my own personal experience, I'd strongly suggest getting a Toshiba, HP or a Sony. This is a little dated, but it might give some help on "budget notebooks:" http://www.pcworld.com/article/142810/top_5_laptops_under_1000.html Also see: http://staples.shoplocal.com/staples/default.aspx?action=entryflash&SneakPee k=y&SiteID=144&PretailerID=-99906&adref=staples_store_locator&StoreRef=1135 -----Original Message----- From: pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:pctechtalk-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of cristy Sent: Wednesday, August 20, 2008 11:08 PM To: pctechtalk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: -=PCTechTalk=- Re: looking for a laptop computer thanks Don, I never heard of ACER. It looks like a nice laptop though. Is the HP you are looking at also at Walmart?
