more info -
I went to the hp site and looked for directions. This is
what it said:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Windows XP
Click Start, and then click Search.
In the list of search types, click A computer on the
network.
Type in the name of the computer the All-in-One is connected
to.
Click Search.
When the computer is found, double-click it.
Double-click the name of the shared All-in-One product.
A Before You Can Use the Printer message appears. Click Yes
and follow the instructions to setup the printer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I did that - and the name of my main computer does not come
up in the search!!

something is funny!! I get on the internet ok -
are there other file sharing places that maybe I need to
check or uncheck?

print

ok -
my workgroup is SCHFAM

My main computer - hooked to the printer, is
'cris-main-9-04'
It runs win xp home

The old dell is 'downstairs'
it runs winxp home
but - we can ignore this one for now - I have it offline
because there is no anti-virus etc. on it. It's not
connected to the network.

the laptop is 'crislaptop'
it runs win xp media edition (which, would be pro)

my son's computer - who knows.
I figured I would ignore his for now. Unless I have to know.
My son said he never had a problem before I got this new
printer combo.
It's an HP all in one psc 1610xi

the printer says share this printer and is called allinone

so - can we just work on the laptop? and ignore the others?

We'll do this step-by-step.

On each computer, you need to go to START > right-click MY
COMPUTER and select PROPERTIES, click the COMPUTER NAME tab.
On the bottom, where it says TO RENAME THIS COMPUTER OR JOIN
A DOMAIN, CLICK CHANGE. go ahead and click the CHANGE
button.

The next screen will have two key things you need to look
at. There is COMPUTER NAME located at the top, and there is
WORKGROUP located at the bottom. EACH computer on the
network has to be on the SAME workgroup. So, on each
computer, check these settings and make sure they are all
the same group name. By default, I believe the workgroup
name is actually called WORKGROUP. That's fine and you can
leave that.

Now. on the COMPUTER NAME. each computer has to have a
unique and DIFFERENT name. Make sure that's the case here.
Assuming changes were made, you need to restart BOTH
computers.

Also. did you say you have Windows HOME? Or Windows Pro?
