I'd try doing scandisk, I run 98SE and have found when I have problems there's usually errors on the disk. I do the autofix, so I couldn't tell you what they are, I wouldn't understand anyway, so I usually don't bother to check the log. If not, you could try update wizard uninstall, found in System Information/Tools.
