I thought the Ubuntu was a clean install, either as a dual boot or as the only OS on the drive. I assumed that since several different attempts to get rid of Ubuntu had been made that all data was already backed up. Your suggestion to do a system restore might work if Ubuntu is installed on top of a Windows OS rather than as an independent OS. I don't think that is the case, but this would not be the first time I was wrong.
