Like MJH said, Circuit City and Best Buy, as well as some other chains have
marked down stuff. Also, if you check places like Tiger Direct, they usually
have pretty decent systems in your range... with specs like the Costco. here's

Well - I stopped in costco - they don't have the computer anymore - the
reason it is 100 less is that it is a different computer - only a 2.2 ghz -
interesting! and typical of there - once you know you like something - they
never get it in again!!

Firewire ports are similar to USB ports. Its just another transfer protocol.
You'll notice many items like digital cameras have use the firewire ports or
the USB ports. Firewire is faster than USB1, but USB2 is faster than Firewire.
I think they're working on a faster Firewire though.

Again, this is only a quick-thought system that I merely put together by
going to a few sites and getting models and prices. When you're ready, I
have no problem sitting down and giving you detailed info on what to get,
with model numbers and approximate prices.
I tend to find good price using http://shopping.yahoo.com. This is where I
usually buy my stuff from. Like PriceWatch, the Yahoo Shopping is only a
"mall" of shops, and finds you the lowest prices within these registered
shops. Pricewatch sometimes can be a little too low priced. And, with that
I mean that when you go to purchase a find there tends to be some small
print. So, I usually only look to PriceWatch for the larger items.
USB ports... as mentioned already, all the current motherboards have at
least 2 ports for the back. But, if you want more ports, or firewire ports,
then we seek out a mobo that has the extra ports for the front. My specific
mother board on my main system sports the two ports in the back plus an
additional two for the front, should I wish to connect it.
Speakers... yep, forgot to add those. But, you can literally get cheap $5
speakers should you choose, as well as sometimes catch a
"free-after-rebate" sale at the more popular chains. Of course, if you
really want to take advantage of a good sound card with 5.1 surround, you
need the better and more powerful speakers (translated as more $$$).
Microsoft Office... I think you can find the standard version for quite
cheap. Again, check Yahoo Shopping for that one. Your Costco might also
have it for a good price. This also can be researched for the lowest price
online.
Extra stuff... like any system, there's a ton of "extra stuff" you can buy
and attach. I used to have a readout panel that gave me the temperature of
all my components, with an alarm in the event that a particular unit got
too hot. And, this device fit into one of my 5.25 drive bays. But, it was
nice to just look at my tower and see the temperature. I just removed that
recently and replaced it with software that runs in the background. No need
to see the actual temperature, I figured... the software was good enough to
alert me of overheating.
The Dell tower... I know with my old Gateway, when I purchased a new power
supply it didn't fit in their proprietary case. So, yes, very possible the
case won't do. You can always try it and if its no good you then buy a new
one.
