Greywoulf,
since OO's not working anyway, maybe try uninstalling it and
download/install LibreOffice--which was a split-off from OO by some people
determined to keep it free/opensource. I have an XP laptop, and have had no
trouble with opening .docx --just opened one today.
There's a list of operating systems when you scroll down this page; just
click on the Windows link and you can download LO and the help files:
