Does everyone know about the "The Job's not done until Wordperfect won't run"
story from the Windows 3.x days? Supposedly, Ziff-Davis showed up unannounced
at the Redmond campus and there was a dot-matrix printer printed banner with
that message mentioned above was hanging from the wall in the Windows 3.x
programming department. You may also be aware that M$ settled a lawsuit by
Digital Research that alleged that M$ was originally telling people that
Windows 3.x would not load on DR-DOS; only on MS-DOS. Finally M$ successfully
coded Windows 3.x so that Windows actually would not load on anything but
MS-DOS. I also read that M$ settled with Novell over similar tactics that M$
used to take over the wordprocessing/office market. In each case, M$ settled
for an undisclosed amount north of $1 billion each time while, of course,
admitting no wrongdoing..

Consider using LibreOffice

for a couple of years; no problem opening any MS files.
