My reaction is usually to swear AT them while trying to clean up the mess they made. the one thing I can say with at least some degree of certainty is that it's the free ones that cause the most problems after running them. I should also add that I don't avoid them completely. If a system is showing serious issues, I'm likely to run one just to see the results of the initial scan and then go to work to manually make the necessary repairs. I simply don't trust these utilities to know what's best for the PC's owner.
