    I thought you knew me better than that.  I don't give up that easily,

    Each manufacturer makes a single utility that can be used with ALL of 
their drives.  You missed it because you went looking for one specifically 
for the drive you have.  So, here's a link for you to download the WD 
utility.  When you get there, do NOT click on any of the drives listed in 
the choice box.  Just scroll below that area to see what's already awaiting 
your Download command.

    The page is specifically for the DOS version of the floppy disk that 
comes with new retail drives.  You'll want to run the file from within a 
Windows PC in order to create the bootable WD "Data Lifeguard" floppy disk. 
If your computer doesn't have a floppy drive, you can also download the CD 
version, although it's much larger (probably due to video tutorials).  In 
either case, the resulting disk has all of the tools you need to wipe the 
drive clean in preparation for your new Linspire installation.
