OK, I'm finished banging my head on the desk...

I tried the F8>Last known good etc, but it thinks that the log on/log off
was good.

When I boot up my system, I get the normal XP screen.
Then it shows the Welcome screen.
Continues looking like it will boot up.
Gives a second Welcome screen. This time it shows my name (which it never
did before this mess)
It tells me that after I log on, "I can add or change accounts. Just go to
control panel and click user accounts".
At the bottom left is a clickable link that says: "Turn off only for me."
When I click on my name to log on, it says "Loading your settings." And then
it logs off.
And it is back to the Welcome and my name screen.
