Going by conventional wisdom, if you have one device on your IDE cable 
set to master, then the other one should be set to slave.

That sounds right. The sound connection (if you have one) will come from 
the drive to either the sound card or an equvalent connector on the 
motherboard (if your sound is integrated into the motherboard).

IDE ports are not related to which bay you install things in. You have 
complete freedom in that area. IDE ports are used to control drives you 
have installed. Most often, there will be one or two 40 pin connectors 
on the motherboard (or sometimes on a card). Using the 40/80 wire cable, 
connect it with the equivalent one on the drive. Take care to get pin 1 
the same on both ends if you want it to work.
