HI Scott, It is possible to get the EMachines brand with an AMD Sempron processor which is the equivalent of an Intel Celeron "D" chip. They come with six USB 2 ports, ethernet port but no floppy drive. And it would be compatible with my present peripherals. . And with 512 MB RAM and 1.7 or 1.8 GHz speed it meets my usage. I am not a gamer and a Pentium IV is not necessary in my case. One of my concerns is that Maxtor customer service was correct that the USB port in the rear of the PC was the only suitable one and the cards are on the front of the machine. My congregation is very elderly and I do not attend services much. And to spend a couple of hundred US dollars for a card installation it may be better like Scott mentions to buy a new Windows XP PC. And perhaps take the time to install my internal power antenna on my TV and buy a $60 VHS. The bottom line unless I get a technician who understands a Compaq mother board I rather have something than nothing. Therefore, you'd still be limited to the speed of your existing USB ports, which you say is the 1.1 standard. Docking stations are intended for laptops, because they are often lacking parallel ports and serial ports and PS/2 ports. However, an increasing number of new desktops are lacking these also, and people who have legacy peripherals and upgrade their computer may need one of these in order to continue to use their legacy equipment. I'm sure the manufacturer would be delighted to have you use their equipment on a desktop, if you so wished, and furthermore would have no way of knowing that you're not using it on a laptop anyway. However, for your purposes, it would not do what you're expecting. I am expecting that the prices of non-Vista Ready computers will drop as the end of the year approaches, and vendors try to get consumers to buy Vista-Ready equipment and try even harder to dump their non-Vista Ready (or Capable) equipment. Note that the Vista Capable specs are lower; most low-end computers on the market meet those specs already. The cheapest at WalMart (online only, not in store) that I'd consider is a $448 eMachine. I just today updated my article on how to buy a computer, now that the Vista requirements and recommendations have been published: http://www.local.nu/HelpDesk/index.php/Choosing_a_computer -- Scott. -- -------list-services-below----------- Regards, John Durham (list moderator) Freelists login at //www.freelists.org/cgi-bin/lsg2.cgi List archives at //www.freelists.org/archives/pchelpers PC-HELPERS list subscribe/unsub at http://modecideas.com/discuss.htm?sig Latest news live feeds at http://modecideas.com/indexhomenews.htm?sig Good advice is like good paint- it only works if applied. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
