Of course, this all depends on the Weather, which isn't looking very nice
for this event. And my thought is, if we can't see the stars due to the
clouds, we tell Mark what we know about them, as far as how faint they are,
when we are at the event.

The plan was, according to Mark
About 9pm, have Mary in hand, walk up to scope, and
then hear about and see the two stars named after them.
Very romantic.

But of course, clouds are a problem.
And timing will be a situation, if clouds are in the sky.

What would my Telescope Team want me to tell Mark? He wants to know which
telescope is going to show his stars that night so he knows who to walk up
to with Mary in hand, and do a romantic viewing of the stars?
Can i put one of you in charge of this, finding and showing the stars the
best we can?

Leah, you are correct, as far as this chart goes, however the images that
Howard posted a few emails back from the DSS do actually do show stars at
the right coordinates. My guess is that the company may likely be using
the same images and RA/DEC locating feature that Howard and I used. That’s
why they can’t provide magnitude information – it’s not available. They’re
probably 10th or 11th or even 12th magnitude stars that will be
exceedingly difficult to try to find. They are not even in SkySafari Pro,
which has 15 million objects.

I think all we can do is point to the general area and look for something
that resembles the images Howard posted - and no guarantees.

to put things in proportion - this chart shows stars down to about 8th
mag. i.e. the very smallest ones shown are about 8th mag. the chart is
accurate except for the two marked stars. based on the scale used for the
other stars in the chart, the marked stars are depicted with a magnitude of
about 5-6, e.g. compared to the little trapezoid of 5th-mag stars just
north of beta Cep. (the marked stars are directly to the right of the
bottom two stars of the trapezoid.) but there are actually no stars of
that size in that area. there is a 6th-mag star (which is shown at the
bottom of the blue circle) but no other stars of that size in the positions
shown. and as we have already seen, there are some 9th-10th mag stars, but
none of those exactly matches the coordinates we were given.

Hi Terri,

Here's a pic of the chart. Let me know if it comes through clear on your
end
