A curb extension (or also kerb extension, bulb-out, kerb build-out, nib,
elephant ear, curb bulge and blister) is a traffic calming measure, intended to
slow the speed of traffic and increase driver awareness, particularly in
built-up and residential neighborhoods
Another term for a curb extension, which is a section of sidewalk at an
intersection or midblock crossing that reduces the crossing width for
pedestrians and can help reduce traffic speeds.An extension of the sidewalk or
curb line into the parking lane to reduce the effective street width. ..

work, Gene!
What I plan to do in
this call is to point out the issues that this planned intersection change
raises for us in a very general way – no mention of APS’s, shortening of
crossing times, and the critical need for properly-installed warning strips
especially where the bulb out is. I will ask for a call or meeting with
us and one of our o&m members and then ask the question of how we can as a
coalition representing a community, have input as plans are being made.
I hope if Margaret takes the time to grasp the importance of our issues
at this one intersection, she’ll see that it’s an important conversation to
have across the board.

I just looked over the community
board 4 presentation. There is no mention at all of APS. They make a big
point that this intersection is at the 99th percentile for injuries (55 in 5
years), with not a peep about Selis Manor being located on the block. It
seems amazing to me that APS are not in this
presentation.
The presentation materials state
in text there will be a southbound protected lag turn, meaning the left turns
are allowed at the end of the green phase. But then they show the exact
signals in the three phases and the left turns are leading, meaning they
happen at the beginning of the green cycle, which would
be disastrous.
Overall, there is less time to
cross all the crosswalks except the west. Crossing at the east crosswalk, the
WALK and DON'T WALK signal time is now reduced by 3 seconds, and the north
and
south crosswalk times are reduced by 7 seconds.
The rendering of the intersection
clearly shows the islands' cut-throughs will narrow the north and south
crosswalk pathways by about half.
The pedestrian islands, which are
on 7th
Ave., are 7 feet wide, meaning they will want to
put in the wrong width DWS.
