Had that happen in my class this week - we had the students destroy the 
active redo log group, then bring up the DB in MOUNT to recreate the 
redo logs.  However, for 1/2 the class Oracle Restart kept attempting to 
restart and causing the students to hit 3113s (effectively a race 
condition) just connecting as sysdba, never mind trying to startup (even 
nomount).   Disabling Restart did the trick.
