I think it's not so much a case of the choices being inappropriate,
it's that they were made for a specific situation.  It's like the
choices you make when building, say, an overshot watermill cane be
right for an overshot watermill.  Whilst such a construction uses the
same basic principles as a gas turbine engine (and the gas turbine can
perform the same tasks), to build the gas turbine you need to change a
lot of those choices and no matter how much you retrofit the
watermill, short of a complete redesign from the ground up, the early
design choices will limit the end result.
