I think block devices are buffered, so you would need to use raw devices (or 
open de block devices with the O_DIRECT flag).

Yes, you're probably just seeing caching by Linux.  You can try using raw/block 
devices or direct IO (depending on your OS) to avoid the OS buffering, or you 
can flush the Linux buffer cache prior to your test.
