MIIS is not based on Sybase's replication product. It is software =
Microsoft acquired from another company a few years ago, and MIIS is =
their latest release on of it. It's primary purpose is to synchronize =
identity information betwee such repositories as SunOne and Active =
Directory. But, it also will synchronize such information between =
Oracle databases. It does not require any triggers. Data is pulled =
from the various participating databases and compared by MIIS. Any =
differences found are then fixed according to the rules in MIIS. The =
central SQL Server database provides an audit trail, and can also be =
accessed directly for current identiy information.

It is not as was being touted by our Windows group a solution to =
replication. Its method of identifying new records via comparing =
different datasets restricts its use to small datasets. Oracle has a =
product, Oracle Identity Manager, Tuvoli has one also, and I think Sun =
does as well.

I'm going to try to have Oracle demo theirs. =20

Subject: MIIS

Anyone using MIIS, Microsoft Identity Integration Server, for =3D =
replication between Oracle databases. It appears it works something =3D =
like an ETL in that you map fields from one database onto fields for =
=3D another. It also maintains its own database in SQL Server so it can =
=3D perform fast refreshes. Much like at ETL data is pulled from one =
=3D database and pushed to others. Unlike an ETL which usually gathers =
=3D infromation from various sources and pushes the data out to a =
warehouse, =3D data can flow in any direction. Rules in MIIS say who is =
the =3D authorative source for the data and will even revert data back =
to the =3D value found in the authoritative source should that data be =
changed in =3D another database.

I'm not sure how all this works. Snapshots which we use quite a bit =3D =
here do not provide the same functionality. Perhaps Advanced Queuing =
=3D comes closer. Lot's of people like having a centralized place to =
=3D control data distributions which MIIS provides. I'm a bit leery of =
=3D placcing any dependency on Microsoft. The product does have =
momentum. =3D Data protection rules which we were said to be immutable =
may be changed =3D to accommodate this product.

Not to be too negative, the product does fill a need. I'm looking for =
=3D another answer.
