If you have experience with Data Guard or Quest's Shareplex you will start to
see some similarities- more so with Shareplex though.
If you are going to do some serious GG work, make sure you look into things
like "discard" files and conflict resolution. Also make sure you are up to
date on GG patches. I would also suggest making sure all the servers in the GG
config are set to the same time zone, which makes it easier on the DBA. Make
sure NTP is accurately set up.

Thanks to everyone up to now, this is a great start.

I've probably got enough to get me going, I can get the nitty grittys through
reading and trials and error :-).

Cheers

Gleb Otochkin provided a really nice primer
http://www.pythian.com/news/7959/oracle-goldengate-installation-part-1/.
I'd suggest starting there, reading the latest docs for your version, and
setting up a couple VMs to get some hands on. Golden Gate is pretty slick.
