Two strides forward were made today, each one also had a negative feature.
        1. A lister let us know about an Optacon repair person in Canada,
Mr. Stam. If any other listers have used Mr. Stam, please report your
experiences to the list or to me privately. The reason for this is that
among the respondents with broken Optacons particularly, there were
several reports of bad experiences having Optacons repaired. No names were
given as to who these repairers might have been. Nevertheless, before I
can fell comfortable offering the name to respondents, I would like just
one or two more references. Thanks again, Clinton, for recommending Mr.
Stam. If there are parts he does not have, perhaps he can join with other
repairers to get what he needs.

        2. A ribbon wrap-up. We found a source for the Smith-Corona 2200
ribbons as well as all kinds of other ribbons and cartridges for
typewriters, printers and copiers. American Ribbon and Toner in Florida,
U.S.A. supplies all of these and they doship to other countries.
Unfortunately, they currently have a policy of a minimum order of one
hundred dollars. This is a rencent policy, only in effect for the last six
months. Even their own sales persons are against it. If enough people
write to them explaining that they would become customers except for the
hundred dollar minimum, maybe they will reverse this policy.
By the way, Office World, recommended in a previous message, does not ship
to Canada.
I myself have had very negative experiences using the office supply chain
called Staples. My printer ribbons were vey costly and they did not last
because they were half dried out when they arrived. Also, more than once,
I received the wrong size ribbon because the order pickers were carless in
filling the order and sent the wrong box with the wrong product.
American Ribbon and Toner is cheaper by far and they stand behind their
products for a year from the date of purchase. Example: The Smith-Corona
2200 ribbons cost fifteen dollars for a box of six. Adding in shipping,
the total might be twenty dollars. The message posted for Office world
indicated a cost of eight dollars per ribbon plus shipping.
For my printer which is a Panasonic, I've spent thirty dollars for two
ribbons in Staples and had them last maybe a onth. For my box of six
ribbons which I bought two years ago from American Ribbon and Toner I
spent thirty dollars also, but for six ribbons. None of them were dry or
damaged.
If you wish to write to the company and explain your needs as an
individual and particularly as a blind person who depends upon quality
products, you can email the main office.

That's all I intend to say on the subject of ribbons.
That's all for May 1.
Catherine
