Hi, All,

Video-Tim is built in Germany, and uses a refreshable array of dots, rather
than vibrating pins, to display the image. One uses a camera similar to that
of the Optacon, to input the image.

My last figures showed that the cost of a Video-Tim was approximately 14,000
euros, or about $21,000.

Yet, it appears to have disappeared.

Hello everyone,

When I was a computer programmer and worked in an open-plan office, I used to
use my optacon inside a large padded envelope to deaden the noise so as not to
irritate my colleagues. It worked remarkably well.

By the way, Mark, what is video-tim?

I use all kinds of technology for reading. I scan and OCR books using a flatbed
scanner and Abbyy FineReader on my MacBook, I use an IRISPen Executive handheld
scanner when I'm away from home and haven't room to cary my optacon along with
my computer, and I download ebooks onto both my computer and my iPhone. But
there's nothing to replace the optacon when it comes to reading handwriting or
identifying cans and jars in my kitchen cupboards.

Lots of tasks have been made easier with more recent technological solutions,
but nothing is as versatile as the optacon and that is why I would never want
to be without one.

Cheers,

Anne
