In your odd way of relishing to repeat that old mantra of yours, "the ship slowly sinks," you continue to miss the points articles such as this one make.

The population in all developed countries is aging. Said another way, the median age is going up, in developed countries. And people behave differently as they age.

But that is NOT the point this article made.

The point is that the younger generations are moving on to alternative delivery systems for the content they want.

From Wikipedia

Describing itself as a fake news program, The Daily Show draws its comedy and satire from recent news stories, political figures, media organizations, and often, aspects of the show itself.
...

The program has grown in popularity since Stewart took over hosting, with organizations such as the Pew Research Center claiming that it has become a primary source of news for many young people, an assertion the show's staff have repeatedly rejected.

An obvious TV program example would be, the old Mod Squad, vs today's NCIS. The old program catered only to teenagers and 20somethings, the new program attracts all age groups. It makes sense to do this, as the median age goes up.

Hmmmm.

The Mod Squad was on ABC for five seasons. For seasons 2 through 4 it was rated in the top 25 programs for the season, with ratings share between 20 and 22%. There were about 60 million TV households during those seasons, so The Mod Squad typically reached more than 12 million viewers.

For the 2009-2010 season , NCIS delivered a 11 share while NCIS LA delivered a 9 share. Clearly the audience share has dropped dramatically, but the number of TV households has grown.

There are now about 114 million TV households in the U.S. although that number dropped for the first time since the early '90s.

So in terms of audience share the networks have lost half their audience, but the total numbers are similar to 1970. By the way, the CBS audience has always skewed to older viewers, by design.
