The real cause of this is the fact that in 1953, RCA chose to alter the
NTSC sync frequencies from 15750/60
to 15734.26/59.94 to maintain the 227.5 samples per line of 3579545.45
color subcarrier rather than stick with
3583125 which worked perfectly well with 15750/60, but beat against the
4.5 mHz sound carrier producing a
920 kHz beat which was visible in the picture..
They made this change screwing up television forever rather than offset
the 4.5 mHz sound carrier to eliminate
the 920 kHz beat between it and the color subcarrier. Poor choice. What
a ruckus this has caused over the years.
