Good morning friends! Just now (7:30am), I had a flock of large shorebirds fly fairly low over my house. There was about 10-12 of them, though I didn't have time to count exactly. They had long bills that were downcurved at the ends. I don't think they had long necks like an Ibis would, so I think I can eliminate those. I think a flock size this large is more likely to be Whimbrels than Long-billed Curlews. I don't think the bills were quite that large either, but that could be misjudged within the couple seconds I watched them go by. I feel fairly confident they were whimbrels, though I reserve the right to be wrong ;) Anyways, there is a flock of unusual shorebirds in the mid-valley! If you drew a line between Baskett Slough and Ankeny NWR, that seemed to be their flight path, going towards Ankeny. So keep your eyes out for this flock! Cheers! Brandon Wagner Independence
