Highlights - Millican Valley - We started with scoring our "sage trifecta". About 24 Greater Sage Grouse, Sage Thrasher, 1st one impossible to find but singing vigorously and many seen later, and a Loggerhead Shrike being pestered beautifully by a pair of Sagebrush Sparrows. Another Sagebrush Sparrow sat up on a tall bitterbrush giving us ample time for everyone to have scope views front and back. Steve reviewed the plumage details to note, now that it has been split and ours is no longer the "Sage". Wowed in Harney county with the beauty and numbers of white geese, with their varied flight patterns, strings, then blizzards, a few Vees and their flocking behaviors. Heavy plops from above left 5 of us sporting wet green excrement. A different kind of wow. We had 2 black Ross's Geese, among a flock estimated by some to number 15 to 20 K birds, about 97% Ross's and rest Snow. A GRAND spectacle. Other large flocks were in the area as well. Hundreds of Sandhill Cranes and many Long-billed Curlews, calling, displaying and feeding were throughout the wet fields. Greater White-fronted Geese were only found north of town along Foley Dr. as were the only Marbled Godwits (15) of the day. No Rough-legs today but we were happy to see 2 or 3 Swainson's Hawks. See the full list of birds below. D means Deschutes county only, MV means Millican Valley, in D county. Thanks to Merle for e-birding the birds of today. Thanks to the many who brought scopes, it was helpful to have 7 scopes so everyone saw the birds. And thanks to so many birders with keen eyes and ears. A very brief stop on the way home at Horse Ridge to enjoy the Mountain Goat was a nice cap to the day. Thanks to Karen Gentry who co-led, birders Sherrie Pierce, Merle Greenway, Steve Kornfeld, Barry McKenzie, Cathy Beck, Tom Lawler, Joan Mayer, Ken and Ann Nora Hashagen, Mary Ann Kruse, Peter Low, Ann and Dave Wildman, Todd Alleger, Cindy Zalunardo and Loren Smith. If anyone ever wonders what it takes to "lead" these trips, it mostly means communication, paperwork, reminders, making a list, timekeeping, as there are so many great birders on the trips, that everyone locates the birds and shares. Great team effort as always.
