Jackson County has different SLAs/maintenance windows for different systems depending on who uses them and when they normally work. We have such diverse customers that there is no one-size-fits-all window. For example, the Roads fleet maintenance system can be taken down without notice anytime from 6pm Fri to 6am Mon because they never use it on weekends. ERP window is any Saturday night without notice, but we try never to take the Jail down on a Saturday night because it's their DUII rush hour. Maintenance on general systems like email, etc. can happen any Tue or Thu evening from 6:00-9:00 pm so long as a notification goes out by noon that same day. If the maintenance will be particularly disruptive, or has to happen outside the regular window for some reason, we provide 2 business day advance notice. Best regards, Mark L. We have a monthly maintenance window on the second Wednesday starting at 5:30PM. Which means we had one last night. This effort covers all systems and networks including Regional Law Enforcement and Jail. It excludes 911 who provide their own support. We pre-plan the maintenance effort and bring down only the systems necessary, with only the staff necessary. Typically tasks queue up pretty quickly so there's plenty to do. The time window for maintenance varies, but it's typically around 2-3 hours. We announce the expected up time in a reminder email to everyone. Last night's was estimated to be from 5:30 to 7:30 and we were back up by 7:15. Here's an example of the content of the email we sent on 2/11: The Deschutes County IT department will perform routine computer system maintenance, Wednesday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm. All central systems will be affected, some only briefly, during the maintenance period. NOTE: 911 Operations will NOT be affected. If you have questions or concerns, please contact... We feel it would be difficult and disruptive to do maintenance any other way and our users are cooperative. Sound familiar? In the middle of this utopia world of expectations we live in we have found it necessary to schedule one Saturday a month to do preventative maintenance. On these days we do things like storage migration, hardware swap outs, patch upgrading and whatever else we need to do that requires us to take servers down or at least exercise contingency processing procedures for critical systems (Sheriff's Office, 911 Center). This doesn't mean that we bring everything down but there are areas that are affected with service interruption during this process. So my real question is: (finally!) Do you have scheduled maintenance days and what is the frequency? Monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly? Thanks in advance for all your wonderful input!
