Eric, Multnomah County Sheriff has a small but effective Computer Crime
Lab. We currently have one LE Deputy Sheriff assigned to conduct
Computer Forensics. For a time we did have one person assigned to the
FBI Regional Lab, but have since pulled back from that and do all of our
work in house.

Our Computer Crime Lab is not part of the Sheriff's Office IT Unit, but
we do work closely with them and use similar policies around
investigations that may start as non criminal, but become criminal later
on. In our lab we have the ability to process, MAC OS, Windows and
Linux. We do have a completely separate network for the computer crime
lab, while also having MCSO network connectivity for the deputy to
conduct non investigative work. These two networks are never tied
together. Much of the training MCSO received was provided by the
Federal government (Secret Service and US Treasury) and we are
currently using software that was purchased as part of the training.
Deputy Biles is currently away on vacation, but I can have him touch
base with you on the exact software package he uses to conduct
investigations when he is back if you are interested.

Eric,

Marion County has operated a very successful Computer Forensics lab for
a few years now. The function of this lab is to take confiscated
computer equipment, cell phones, etc that are suspected to be used for
criminal purposes and secure evidence on those devices and write reports
for the courts. The lab is in a separte and secure area in one of the
Sheriff's facilities. The lab is segregated on it's own network for
criminal investigation work but our Forensic Specialist (who is actually
an IT employee but is also a Sheriff's Special Deputy) can also connect
to the County network for County-related business. As far as equipment
I would have to get that information from our Forensic Specialist. The
cost for training and continual recertification in the past has been
shared by IT and the Sheriff's Office but more recently is covered
mostly by the Sheriff's Office.

We also have an IT employee who works half time as a Crime Analyst for
the Sheriff. This however has more to do with extracting crime data,
mapping it, analyzing, etc.

If you need more detailed information or would like to visit us, please
let us know.

"Working Better Together"

Our sheriff's dept here in Umatilla County is looking to put together a
computer crime lab. We were wondering if other counties have a computer

crime lab set up, and if so, how is it set up?

1) Is the lab in a separate, private area and does it have a separate,
or segregated Internet connection, so that it's not accessible to
everyone?
2) What kind of equipment do you have (hardware, software, etc)?
3) Is the crime analyst a sheriff-trained employee or is it a member of

your computer department trained in computer forensics?

Any other info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
