In privacy debate, tech has two faces

Academics and researchers meeting at IBM's Almaden Research Center in San
Jose, California, this week discussed the implications of technology for
the protection of privacy. In our highly connected world, vast amounts of
information on individuals is collected - anything from credit card
purchases, phone calls, financial information to web surfing habits.
However, according to participants, technology can be a powerful tool to
help protect privacy, as well as to erode it. For instance, technology can
be utilized in order to restrict access to data and limit disclosure to
those authorized to view it. Technology alone is unable to protect personal
privacy - "regulation, marketing, financial incentive and culture change
are all part of preserving some measure of privacy."
