Are passwords passé?

Despite their inherent insecurity, many organizations still use passwords
to authenticate system users out of habit, or due to bureaucracy, inertia
and "institutional consent." Depending on how sensitive data or
transactions are, two- or three-factor authentication - involving something
you know, something you have and something you are - is recommended. Often,
abandoning passwords seems too complicated, but technologies exist that
could make the switch relatively painless. Examples include SecurID tokens,
USB tokens and smart cards. In some areas, such as health care and
financial services, legislation has forced organizations to implement new
authentication solutions.
