Credit card hack traced to outsider

Data Processors International, of Omaha, Nebraska, states that an
"unauthorized outside party" had broken into its computer system, and
stolen transaction records and prompted an FBI and Secret Service
investigation. DPI spokesman Scott Jones declined to comment on how many
credit cards have been compromised, though credit card companies and the
Secret Service have put the number around 8 million. DPI, which handles
transactions for mail-order and TV-marketing, notified credit card
companies and law enforcement immediately, and is sharing all their
information with the FBI and Secret Service. Visa, Mastercard, Discover,
and American Express cardholders have been affected, though there have
been no reports of fraud. All four companies have policies protecting
consumers from liability for fraudulent use.

Title: PNC cancels 16,000 cards after hacking theft incident
Pittsburgh's largest bank, PNC Bank, cancelled 16,000 customer
ATM/debit/check cards that carry the 'Visa' logo on February 19, 2003
after it was informed by Visa that the cards had been compromised by a
computer hacker. PNC is notifying affected customers and is in the process
of issuing replacement cards. The cards are among the approximately eight
millions Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover account numbers
that the hacker gained access to by breaking into an unnamed outside
payment processor's systems. Rhode Island-based Citizens Bank has also
cancelled thousands of customer cards carrying the 'MasterCard' logo.
Authorities are investigating the hack.
