Subject: Research Experiences for Teachers"

DIMACS, the Center for Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer
Science, is offering a "Research Experiences for Teachers" program for
mathematics and computer science high school teachers.=A0 This exciting
program, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, concentrates on an
area of Discrete Mathematics that is extremely relevant to today's world.
The theme of the program will be "Graph Theory and its Applications".

The DIMACS Connect Institute (DCI) will be held at Rutgers University in
Piscataway, New Jersey from July 13 - August 1, 2003, plus an optional two
weeks in the summer of 2004. Applicants who are selected will have food
and lodging provided and limited travel scholarships will be available.

The intent of the DIMACS Connect Institute (DCI '03) is to integrate
education and research in the mathematical and computer sciences. During
the lecture portion of the institute, many of the world's foremost
researchers in Graph Theory and Combinatorics will be involved.=A0 In
addition to giving technical talks to their peers in their areas of
expertise, researchers will also give lectures designed for a more general
audience including teachers. Participating teachers will have special
classes in Graph Theory and will be introduced to related software.=A0 They
will also interact with the researchers, with the goal being to establish
long-term partnerships and bring current research and researchers into the
high school classroom. During the research portion of the institute, the
teachers will have the opportunity to be involved in a research project led by a
research mentor and to develop materials to take back to their schools for
the 2003-2004 academic year. During that academic year, the teachers will
be assisted with the development of a research experiences program for
their students. Each teacher and one student will be funded for a
conference to take place in April/May 2004, at which project results will
be presented. The program during the summer of 2004 will emphasize sharing
of experiences and a new, more sophisticated research experience.

Details on the program may be found on the web at
