Enterprises looking to secure that networks at a lower cost, or who have
needs not met by market technology are building their own systems, often
using Linux and other open-source software. Tony Karakashina, while a
network administrator for Rochester Midland, built a multiple IP Security
based virtual private network (VPN) from old computers the company had in
storage (Pentium and Pentium II machines) and Free S/WAN, an open source
package for VPNs. Karakashina credits his experience with Linux in making
the VPN possible. Doug Moorhouse of Thompson Financial, used Linux boxes as
firewalls, since the packet filtering and security features he wanted were
built into the Linux kernel.
