The Jacques Cousteau Coastal Education Center in Tuckerton, NJ is
dedicated to providing professional development and educational
resources for K-12 educators. The Jacques Cousteau Center and its
partners have recently been named the Mid Atlantic Center for Ocean
Science Education Excellence (COSEE) by the National Science
Foundation (NSF).
Take a look at our 2003 opportunities at
http://marine.rutgers.edu/cousteau/education/education.htm. Highlights
include:
- The Marine Activities Resources & Education (MARE) Summer Institute
for K-5 educators (August 10-15, 2003). MARE, developed by the
Lawrence Hall of Science, is a collection of interdisciplinary marine
science activities designed to bring the excitement of ocean learning
to your school. The Jacques Cousteau Coastal Education Center is
one of several regional training centers for MARE.

- "Bringing the Ocean to the Middle School Classroom" (July 14-17,
2003): A workshop designed to introduce grade 6-9 educators to new
scientific content and applications for the classroom. The goal of
the workshop is to provide participants with content, resources, and
experiences based on the latest oceanographic research, technology,
and data.
- On –line Curricula Project: Pilot Teachers Needed! The Mid
Atlantic COSEE is offering the opportunity to review unique and
compelling Internet based curricula that focus on interdisciplinary
ocean science topics. The C.O.O.L Classroom is designed to teach
basic science concepts using an interdisciplinary marine science
theme. The Gulf Stream Voyage is an online multidisciplinary project
that utilizes both real time data and primary source materials to help
guide students to discover the science and history of the Gulf Stream.
The Mid Atlantic COSEE is offering the opportunity for educators to
pilot test these materials in their middle or high school classrooms.
