It is time to clean-up the debris in the garden. Prune the perennials that were left for winter interest. Add a 1- to 2-inch layer of compost to the soil. Compost adds nutrients, improves soil structure, and controls weeds. As I tell my students,"You can never go wrong when you add organic matter (compost)."

.

When the soil temperature reaches 50 degrees it is time to plant potatoes and peas and time to transplant cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and artichoke into the garden. Soil temperature can be measured with a thermometer.

.

Start to remove the layers from the tender roses that were covered last fall. These layers should be removed as they thaw but it will probably be early May before the final layer is removed unless we get an early spring warm-up.

.

Warm season crops like to be started indoors. These crops prefer consistent moisture and warmer temperatures. Place eggplant, pepper, tomato and herbs under grow lights 24-7 until they have formed one to two true leaves at which time the seedlings can be acclimated to cooler, dark nights. Wait until the danger of frost is past before transplanting warm season crops into the garden.
