Pyrus calleryana Bradford, aka Bradford pear, is one of the most popular
deciduous trees in America, and its no wonder it has a lovely teardrop
shape, produces little to no fruit, and flowers beautifully in early
spring. But oh, those flowers! Many have noticed that trees in the callery
pear family emit a foul stench not unlike body odor.
.
Through the years, the Bradford pear has learned to adapt to its early
spring bloom time, when pollination can be difficult. March weather
changes with each puff of wind, so the tree cannot depend on having warm
days to resurrect the fuzzy bees that frequent flowers. Instead, it
produces that funky smell, which attracts a pollinator that enjoys that
rotten scent: the blow fly.
.
The blow fly is attracted to, among other things, decaying flesh and dung.
The fly finds the callery pear very enticing, lands on its flowers,
pollinates and leaves in absolute disappointment. Just think what the fly
must feel as it realizes its only a flower and not a decaying carcass.
Rats!
