HARRISBURG -- The floodwaters of the Susquehanna River were receding on
Friday night here and elsewhere in the state, but the difficulties remain
for thousands of people.

The river crested at 25.17 feet early yesterday, the fourth-worst flood in
Harrisburg history, still the worst since the remnants of Tropical Storm
Agnes in 1972.
.
It was worse in Wilkes-Barre, where the river crested at 42.66 feet late
Thursday, higher than the record set in the historic Agnes flooding that
devastated that region.

National Guard Humvees blocked off Front Street on the West Shore.
Soldiers patrolled high-risk spots across the region.

At least seven people have been killed in flooding throughout the state.
Gov. Tom Corbett surveyed the wreckage from a plane. President Obama
declared a state of emergency, allowing federal aid for 42 counties.
.
About 500 people were still in Red Cross shelters across southcentral
Pennsylvania.
.
A few major highways, including the Pennsylvania Turnpike, reopened, but
hundreds of roads remained closed. Traffic remained snarled on Route 11/15
well past sundown as Penn State fans inched toward Beaver Stadium in State
College.

Amtrak rail passenger service between the capital city and Lancaster
remains suspended.
.
People in parts of Dauphin and Perry counties still had to boil any
drinking water. Families across the region were asked to conserve. In the
badly hit Hershey area, they were being asked to use less water for days.
Water treatment plants and sewage treatment plants were underwater,
inaccessible or both.
