One caveat that I want to add to Doug B's sage information - a member  
of a Printers' forum that I belong to had faithfully backed up his  
drives daily on an external drive and felt secure with his system.  
However, when he encountered a major HD glitch, he plugged in his  
backup drive and found to his horror that the drive itself had not  
backed up properly and the data was not being recorded as he had  
thought. If your data is important, one needs to go the extra step of  
verifying and testing it. Take a look at the link below and also  
google terms like: testing backup drives.
