New icons usually appear on the right side of the Dock so now I can tell easily which app is which if both happen to be or get opened. Then by click/holding on the old app icon you can choose Show in Finder which takes you right to it. Then a right click (?) (I only have a one button mouse) or control click allows you to move it to the trash. Helpful! OSX usually gives you 2 or 3 ways to do something, some less obvious than others.
