Hi Ian,
You might try a "Laser Cleaning Disk" first, but if this problem 
continues I do not recommend replacing the CD Rom: I've had two go in 
the last few months on separate machines: I suggest an external DVD/CD 
Writer would be a more useful and less expensive replacement 
($150-250).
