External usb drive for "bootable backup"?
Thanks to all for the great advice regarding my G4 Tower (AGP Graphics)
partitioning/backup questions. I am planning to move from Panther to Tiger
on the G4.
Have found a very informative source regarding formatting and partitioning
hard drives (Tiger and Leopard). It's on Ken Stone's Final Cut Pro website
and has lots of screen shots and explanations.
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/partitioning_tiger.html
Stone refers to firewire drives in his instructions. However, I have been
using a used external usb 2, 120 GB (Western Digital) drive with no
difficulty for the past one and a half years. I use it for weekly backups
ofdocuments (I use thumbs and CDs for daily backups).
The 120 GB external came with two partitions--one about 80 GB and the other
about 40 GB). As an alternative to installing a second "slave" drive in my
G4, I suppose I could also look at erasing this external, installing Tiger
and then using it as the "bootable backup."
My only concern is that it's a usb external and Stone refers to firewire. I
have a firewire port but I use it for my CD burner. Do you think the usb
external is an OK alternative?
Please advise. Thanks.
Leith
