I think this article explain why the window installer appear
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3Dkb;en-us;290740
To resolve it, I reckon try to repair and see if it help but of course,
you can see why the window installer generate an error by looking at the
logfile.

Subject: [mso] Word won't open

I am hoping someone can help me out with the following problem:

I can not open any of my Microsoft Office products,including; Word,
Excel,=20
and Publisher. When I try to open them I receive the following message:=20
"Windows installer failed to install the program associated with this
file.=20
Contact your system adminstrator."

The programs were working fine until I uninstalled the virtual bouncer=20
application, (I do not know how that got installed on my computer) and=20
restarted my computer.

This is the second time this has happened. The first time I installed=20
OfficeXP. I was using Office2000. Those files are still on my computer.

I tried deleting the normal.dot file, but that did not help. I can open
Word=20
when I run the 'winword.exe /a' but then I get a dialog box saying,=20
'Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run=20
setup to install the application.'

I can reinstall OfficeXP, but I want to find out why this is happening
so it=20
doesn't happen again.

Thanks.

Beth
