Michele: If you really only have one field (or under, say a half-dozen) you might consider just using document properties. You can create custom properties to your heart's content, and the GUI already has a dialog box (File > Properties, Custom tab) to change their values. (In fact, you might get by using one of the built-in properties: Subject, Keywords, Category, etc. and not need the Custom tab at all.) To insert the value of the property, you insert a DocProperty field for the property you created. Re your approach, I think may be wanting to insert an x-ref to a bookmark? That's a REF field. I haven't read the topic you refer to, but you only bookmark certain text once, then REF to it for subsequent uses.
