Yeah...In Office XP, he shouldn't be there by default...to get rid of
him, just right click on him and go to Options...in there Uncheck the
box that says "Use the Office Assistant"....he's still alive and well in
Office XP, but should NOT have been turned on by default.

I'm thinking maybe you need to uninstall Office, run the Office 2000
eraser utilities, then reinstall Office XP

There are instructions on my Office page for COMPLETELY removing Office
2000:

Scroll down til you see the section on Erasers.

Good luck!!

I actually didn't have to turn it on, I had just gone there to verify
that it was in fact on. Now that it's working in plain text but not
HTML, I'm pretty sure it's on, I'm just a little freaked out by the
selective functioning.

Another issue which may or may not be related to this is that I
installed Office XP and that's how I got Outlook 2002 on here. But I
still had that annoying paperclip office assistant from version 2000
every time I checked the Help. That's not right, is it? So perhaps
what I really need to do is just blow it off my system and start over.
