I actually didn't have to turn it on, I had just gone there to verify
that it was in fact on. Now that it's working in plain text but not
HTML, I'm pretty sure it's on, I'm just a little freaked out by the
selective functioning.

Another issue which may or may not be related to this is that I
installed Office XP and that's how I got Outlook 2002 on here. But I
still had that annoying paperclip office assistant from version 2000
every time I checked the Help. That's not right, is it? So perhaps
what I really need to do is just blow it off my system and start over.

Thanks for the info, Parker. I guess I just made a wrong assumption,
since I never use Word as my email editor.

Elise...I would try Parker's suggestion of reinstalling the
spellchecker....or try Detect and Repair from the Help menu

You said you went into the Spelling options in Tools>Options and set it
up there....in my experience, by default, Outlook 2002 has this already
set up when you install it, so you shouldn't have had to turn it on in
the first place. If you did, then I'm thinking you didn't install
Outlook completely the first time?

Linda-

I also though that might be the case. To check it, I set Word to be my
e-mail editor, stopped the spell checker in Word, and left it on in
Outlook. The spell checker still ran. The only way I could get the spell
checker to not work in Outlook was to turn it off in Outlook.
