[mso] O2003 e-mail contacts

In O2003 (even SP1), when I start to type an address into a new e-mail (e.g.
Ed Jones), I get nothing when I type Ed but I do if I erase the Ed and start
to type Jones.
I can probably fix this by changing the "file as" but there has to be a
better way...
Related? There don't seem to be any drop downs when I start typing an
e-mail address in the To field either...
