select the text.

click on Format - Borders and Shading.

select the Shading tab.

Choose a colour, or a shade of grey. With some colours the font 
automatically changes to white. If you need to change font colour, see 
below.

Click OK.

Font colour:

Select the text.

Click on Format - Font.

Select White as your font colour.

Click OK.

Another way to shade text would be with the highlighter tool, found in the 
Formatting toolbar. Select the text, click the toolbar button. Click the 
arrow next to the button to choose another colour.

HOW does one change the background color for individual word or parts of 
lines
of text?

How to change background behind only selected text?
