Hi Anne,
Since this task is not my usual line of work, I don't know what type of
catalog you would call it so I'll describe it a little. It will display
craft supplies, and will probably end up being 100-150 pages long. Each
page will contain as many items on it as the page will comfortably hold.

It is my understanding that we are going to print out one copy and take this
copy to the printer who will compile it into a real book. Actually, the
reason I looked at Publisher is because it is the only software that I can
think of that I already have that might be able to do the job, but after
completing about 6 pages I'm ready to find something, anything, that will
make the job faster and less of a pain. One problem I've already
encountered with Publisher 98 is that I can't figure out how to move
something from one page to another, which is going to be a *must*,
especially further down the road. Maybe I'm just dreaming but I would like
to be able to lay several pages side by side and rearrange between them
until I get the right look on each page.

Word... hmmm. Is that a good option for a task like this? I must admit that
I've never used Word for much more than a gloryfied typewriter, though I
know it can do more, I have never explored its abilities. Oh, except for a
handful of times I used Word's draw tools to create some flow charts.

Any suggestions/advice welcome!!

Pam

When you say a "catalog" do you mean a brochure or an index? If the
latter, Publisher doesn't automate this enough to make it worth
attempting.

There are fairly major differences from P98 in more recent versions but it
could be that you could achieve a better result by producing it in Word
first then importing into Publisher to achieve your desired booklet layout
etc.

Well, the reason I asked is because I have Publisher 98. I was wanting to
ask if there are enough differences between the newer versions and the one
I have to warrant getting a new version. But it would have to be a stand
alone version that I got because for some reason this time of year causes
terrible budget problems. I am building a catalog, btw. Publisher 98 is
getting the job done... but slowly and tediously. I realize that the task
you are trying to accomplish would likely influence the decision.

NOT necessarily!

* Depends on which version, as to whether you GET IT with Office. In 2000
you did.

* It's part of the OFFICE FAMILY...NOT the suite under most all
circumstances.

* It IS part of Office 2003 Small Business Edition...assuming a SOHO would
want to publish their own letterhead, business cards, stationery, etc.

* It is NOT part of Office 2003 Pro...as the general office user is
assumed NOT to need it...so it is sold separately.
