Probably not misusing, but inadvertently deleting.  Word goes out of its way 
to include invisible constructs in deletions, in the (IMHO mistaken) belief 
that it is doing you a favour.

I ALWAYS keep codes and whitespace characters displayed in an attempt to 
stop this happening.
