I dislike HTML email. One of the reasons is that HTML email fetches
information from a distant server when I read it. I'd like to turn that off.
I wouldn't mind HTML email so much if I could turn off all "fetching" and
only view what I had received.

I've frequently asked my colleagues why Microsoft doesn't have an option to
"turn off" HTML email fetching.

Today, I received this "tip" and thought I'd pass it on. It does NOT answer
my question exactly, but it is related.

EDIT REGISTRY TO READ ALL E-MAIL AS PLAIN TEXT

Are you annoyed by HTML messages with flashy formatting? Do you wish you
could suppress all of that noise and just read the text? If you are, and you
do, apparently you're not alone. SP1 for Office XP includes the ability to
configure Outlook to display all non-digitally-signed and nonencrypted
e-mail as plain text.

The first step, of course, is to obtain and install SP1 for Microsoft Office
XP. If you don't already have it, you can get it from Microsoft.

The second step is a little trickier since it involves editing the registry.
As always, before you begin editing the registry, be sure you have a good,
known backup of your system. This is a bit like surgery; if you nick the
wrong thing, the consequences can be serious.

To edit your system registry:

1. Go to Start | Run and type Regedit.

2. Then find the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Options\Mail
key and add a new DWord Value. Name the new value ReadAsPlain.

3. Once the value is created, set it to 1 and then click OK.

4. Once that's done, restart Outlook. All of your e-mail should now appear
as plain text.

Three things to note: First, this change will affect the preview pane; it
will display your messages in plain text, as well. However, despite the
display change, the message format in the store will remain rich text or
HTML. This means that if you forward a message to someone, or undo this
registry change, all of the message's original HTML formatting will be
there. Finally, any pictures that were in the HTML message will appear as
attachments to the apparently plain-text message.

Click here to access Microsoft and obtain SP1 for Office XP.
