Many programs exist in exe files. They don't need The Registry. Any configuration information that needs to be saved from execution to execution, or shared with other programs, are store in files, frequently simple text files (e.g., ini files). But if you allowed that, people would load the programs onto whatever is the latest equivalent of a floppy, and carry that program around from computer to computer using it. That could reduce sales. The solution is simple. Develop ways to limit this behavior, to anchor the program to a single machine. The requirement for The Registry is one such technique. James S.
